Matthew Goodwin, Resident in Counseling

Matthew is a licensed resident in counseling. After graduating from Old Dominion University in 2024 with a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, he has hit the ground working within the Yorktown community! He primarily works with children and teens ages 5-17, however he enjoys working with adults as well! In working with children, Matthew uses a combination approach to explore best avenues for growth, including play-based models, cognitive behavioral approaches, and narrative “story-telling” approaches to encourage young people to take control of their future and feel good about doing so. He also works alongside parents and guardians to foster healthy coping skills and emotional regulation.
In working with adults, he often leans towards the cognitive behavioral method to explore the relationship between thoughts, actions, and emotions, to create a well-rounded therapeutic experience. As Matthew is a resident, he reports to Anita Tieman directly regarding best approaches for each client as he continues to grow towards independent licensure. In working primarily with children and working adults, Matthew can accommodate scheduling appointments to begin as late as 7pm, Monday-Friday.
